It’s important to remember that it takes a significant amount of drugs to produce obvious signs of impairment. For some binge drinking college students, for example, their blood alcohol content could be twice the legal limit before obvious signs of impairment begin to manifest. People who have developed a tolerance for a drug, or those who have consumed only small quantities, will oftentimes seem to be completely normal. That doesn’t mean that they are safe. When specific tests are used, the impairment of judgment, reaction time and coordination can be detected at relatively low levels of drug use. For this reason, things as simple as cooking, swimming or walking home from a friends house, have proven disastrous for some teens.
Tests like the One Leg Stand, the Numbers Test, the ABC’s and the Romberg Balance Test have proven to be highly effective at uncovering moderate to heavy impairment. We also give you some pointers on detecting light impairment though. Click here for the Free Download.
Light impairment has also been the starting line for nearly every addict and substance abuser to ever walk the Earth. Rarely does someone just jump right in to addiction. For this reason, it is very important for parents to remain vigilant for the first signs of experimentation. If caught early and addressed thoroughly, your chances are preventing problems are very high. Once your child knows that you are looking, and knows that you have the ability to reliably detect drug use, they will be significantly less likely to get involved. You can even become a source of strength for them, “I can’t, my Mom tests me every night. She’ll know!”
There are other methods of detecting drug use too. If you haven’t already done so, please read our Diagnosing Drug Use Page, to get up to speed on some other methods. You can use our Free Pupilometer, to help you obtain scientific proof of impairment. Make sure you view or download the Drug Symptom Chart, so you know what to look for.
