When To Seek Help
This tutorial is designed to take away much of the anxiety you will feel as a parent trying to protect your child from a bully. A little bit of qualified advice can go a long way. Still, there are times when it is important to seek professional advice. Bullying can put tremendous strain on a child, sometimes producing nervous conditions, self-mutilation and even suicide. If you believe that your son or daughter may be sinking into depression, or that their victimization is compromising their overall well-being, its time to have them evaluated by a school psychologist or private physician.
There are some warning signs that you should be particularly wary of:
- Cutting class, faking illness or abstaining from school due to bullying
- Becoming physically sick due to anxiety over bullying
- Signs of self harm, such as bruises on the neck or scratches on the wrist
- A loss of interest in favorite hobbies
- A sudden isolation from all friends
- Insomnia or bed-wetting
- Becoming self-hateful or abusive towards others
There are other signs as well. The bottom line is that if you feel that bullying has severely impacted your child’s life, robbing them of happiness, you need to seek out help from a qualified professional.
