Alcohol effects different people in different ways. Drunkeness is not indicated by the presence or absence of one characteristic, but by the totality of the circumstances. Intoxication produces effects which are both visible and invisible. This following list pertains to Visible Signs of Recent Use.

    Appearance:

  • Reddened cheeks, nose or eyes
  • Odor of alcoholic beverage on breath
  • Drowsiness
  • Disheveled clothing
  • Fresh use of breath freshener
  • Stains, spills or vomit on clothing
  • Actions:

  • Missed curfew or avoiding parents upon arrival
  • Delayed response to questions
  • Swaying, staggering or bracing oneself for support
  • Clumsiness
  • Slouching in chair
  • Over use of hand gestures
  • Excessive urination (polyuria)
  • Disposition etc.:

  • Spacey or unusually smiley
  • Talking unusually loudly or softly
  • Rambling, or fragile train of thought
  • Change in normal disposition
  • Increasing talkativeness
  • Unusual language or statements
  • Rapidly fluctuating mood
