What Alcohol Use Feels Like

Alcohol intoxication is described as a fuzziness, a dizziness or light headedness. Drinkers report feeling “free”, uninhibited and clumsy.

Why It Feels That Way: People feel drunk because they have already “overdosed” on
alcohol. A healthy adult body is naturally capable of ingesting and filtering approximately 1 oz. of pure alcohol per hour. This amount is about the equivalent of one drink. Intoxication occurs as the result of a chemical process which takes place after the liver has been overwhelmed by alcohol.

Once the liver falls behind, alcohol floods directly into the blood stream, where it interferes with normal body functions. As it circulates, alcohol eventually effects every organ in the body. The most conspicuous effects of intoxication become evident when alcohol reaches the brain. Once in the brain, alcohol interferes with way the brain normally works. This produces significant physical, neurological and psychological changes. It is true that you actually are a different person when drunk. (See “How Alcohol Works” for details.)
