Overview of Marijuana
Marijuana is the most frequently abused illicit drug in America. It is commonly classified as a hallucinogenic drug, though it also exhibits characteristics more typical to other drug categories. It is cheap and easily accessible across most geographic regions and demographic profiles. It can be smoked or eaten, and its effects are produced by the stimulation of cannabinoid receptors in the brain. The high is commonly described as a “haziness” or “light-headedness”. Marijuana related deaths typically stem from accidental injury due to impairment, with rare deaths also being attributed to: ingesting tainted marijuana and experiencing acute allergic reaction. An unknown percentage of cancer deaths are also attributable to marijuana. Marijuana is one of the easiest illicit drugs for parents to detect.
