Marijuana produces a relatively wide range of effects. Some effects will be detectable only while the person is under the influence of the drug (while they’re high), while other effects will manifest over time. The symptoms described on this page will only be present while the person is actually under the influence of the drug.

Signs and Symptoms of Recent Marijuana Use

These symptoms and circumstances will be present for 2 to 4 hours after an average dose of smoked marijuana. Symptoms vary by person, and by dose. Some symptoms may not manifest at all, others require a bit of technique to evaluate, but don’t let that shake your confidence. This list is meant as a quick peek. If you are serious about diagnosing drug use, just consult our “Drug Evaluation Guide”.

  • Elevated Pulse
  • Elevated Blood Pressure
  • Dilated Pupils
  • Reddened Eyes
  • Lack of Convergence
  • Altered Time Perception
  • Impaired Short-Term Memory
  • Impaired Physical Coordination
  • Impaired Ability to Concentrate
  • Surge of Hunger (Munchies)
  • Mellow Mood
  • Dry Mouth, Throat and Eyes
  • Anxiety or Hallucinations (High Doses)
  • Giddiness/Chuckling
  • Odor of Marijuana on Breath, Hair or Clothes

Users often try to conceal the more conspicuous symptoms. Be equally alert for the recent use of eye drops (gets the red out), or body sprays (masks the odor). If you are confused about how to evaluate things like pulse rate, impaired attention or short-term memory, just click here.
