iStock_000006399300XSmallJust as is found with alcohol, most teens get their marijuana from their friends. Sadly, however, the second most common place to purchase marijuana is school. Drug dealers are the third most frequent source, followed by older siblings and parents. (Source: CASA “Back to School Survey; 2009)

These findings on marijuana highlight the importance of monitoring your child’s friendships. It is interesting to note that alcohol is much less prevalent in the school setting than is marijuana. In fact, illicit prescription drugs are also more readily available at school than is alcohol, a fact corroborated by law enforcement.

60% of parents readily admit that their child’s school likely has a drug problem. Nearly 70% feel that the presence of drugs in a school environment makes it more likely that their kids will become a drug user. Only 25% of parents have ever talked with a school official about the issue. Years of research have corroborated that both the home and school play key roles in protecting children from the allures of substance abuse. Partnership is key.
