How Marijuana Is Used
Inhalation: Marijuana is most commonly inhaled through a joint, blunt, pipe or bong. In each of these cases, loose marijuana is ignited and the smoke is inhaled. It is very common, particularly for young users, to use tobacco products as a disguise for marijuana use. See the “Marijuana Paraphernalia” page for pictures and descriptions of these methods.
Ingestion: Marijuana is also commonly included in teas and confectionaries, such as cakes and brownies. When purchased, marijuana often includes seeds, stems and other portions of the plant that are not desirable for smoking. Called “lumber” this portion is commonly separated and saved for later cooking. It is simply substituted or added into the recipe as any other ingredient. During the cooking process, THC is released into the meal.
Hashish and Hash Oil: Though produced in a different form, hashish and hash oil are used in much the same way as loose marijuana. Hashish can be smoked or ingested using the same methods. Hash oil is often dripped onto loose marijuana or tobacco before smoking, or it is used in cooking.
