The Joint: Marijuana is most commonly inhaled in cigarette form. Loose marijuana is placed into rolling paper to form a “joint”, or marijuana cigarette. The ends are tied off, and the joint is smoked just like a tobacco cigarette.

Rolling Papers:Rolling papers are used to make cigarette style joints. are sold in nearly every gas station and convenience store. Usually behind the counter, they come in small rectangular packs. The packs can be blatant, with marijuana emblems as decorations, or they can appear very generic. A great many of them are designed to look like packs of bubble-gum. One of the most popular brands is EZ-Wider, billed as an economy tobacco rolling paper.

Baggies:Marijuana, especially loose product, is most commonly sold in small plastic zip-lock styled bags. Small doses, called “nickle” or “dime” bags are sold in miniature plastic bags. Often clear, these can vary in their color. Some even have a brand stamp on them. Larger doses, ounces etc. are sold in sandwich sized plastic bags.

Canisters Buds are more commonly sold in pill bottles, 35 mm film containers, or small plastic boxes.

The Roach Clip:As the joint is smoked down and becomes smaller, THC is concentrated in the part closest to the lips. This small partially-burnt portion is called a “roach”. A paperclip, pair of pliers or other device is used to hold this portion of the cigarette, so the user doesn’t burn his fingers or lips. The Blunt:It is very common for marijuana users to purchase tobacco products and refill them with marijuana. A small poker (screwdriver, pen inkwell, or kitchen utensil) is used to remove the tobacco from a cigarette or cigar. Marijuana is then combined with the tobacco and packed inside. The resulting smell and appearance are less identifiable as marijuana.

The Pipe: Smoking through a pipe is the second most common way for people to inhale marijuana. A small portion of loose marijuana is packed into the bowl of the pipe. Its then lit and inhaled. Just like rolling papers and “blunt wraps”, marijuana pipes are widely available for sale, over the counter, at convenience stores and gas stations. Its also very easy to manufacture marijuana pipes, one simple method requires only an apple.

The Bong: A bong is an object that resembles a small vase. Usually glass or plastic, the “vase” will have two stems coming off of the neck. One of these stems has a small bowl on it, and the other is a simple inhalation tube. The bowl is packed with marijuana and lit. The user inhales through the tube. Water is often placed in the bottom of the bong. The water is thought to cool and filter the smoke before it is inhaled. Bongs can be disguised as ordinary objects, or they can be enormous and ornate. They can be easily manufactured out of a simple soda can.

The Hookah: The hookah is a mid-eastern styled water pipe often used by Americans for marijuana smoking. It can have one, or many inhalation tubes coming off of its stem. Its concept and function is similar to that of a bong. Hookahs are popular effects found in college fraternity houses. The inhalation tube is removed, and the Hookah is easily disguised as a lamp or vase.

The Grinder: Marijuana can be sold as whole buds or as loose product. In either case, users prefer to grind or shred it in order to make it more smokable. Grinders are usually circular, but beyond that, they come in a variety of compositions and styles. They resemble a coffee table coaster or hockey puck. The top of the grinder lifts off, the marijuana is placed between the two discs, and the user simply rotates.

The Roller:Some marijuana smokers prefer to use a device to help them roll a joint. These devices have different configurations, but serve the same function. A piece of rolling paper is fed between two rollers or curved surfaces. Marijuana is positioned on top of it. A small crank or lever on the device is then manipulated so that the marijuana is tightly wrapped in the paper.

The Scale: The scale is used to weigh marijuana prior to sale. It is very common for low level users to sell amongst their acquaintances as a means of supporting their own habit.
