Perceived Risk of Marijuana Use
Perceived Risk has been shown to have a strong correlation to drug use. In fact, it is stronger even than one’s expressed disapproval for the drug. Recently, the percentage of teens who express feelings of “great risk” associated with regular marijuana use, has been falling. Currently, less than 60% of high school seniors believe that there is great risk in smoking marijuana. Based upon this change from recent years, some researchers expect to see an increase in marijuana abuse within the near future.
80% of high school seniors still say that they disapprove of regular marijuana use. Things change once the question refers to “occasional use”, and get even more dicey when discussing marijuana experimentation. 54% of high school seniors disapprove of even a one-time try, with 24% claiming to “strongly disapprove”. The remaining 48% of high school seniors report that they do not disapprove of someone trying marijuana once. 37% state that they do not disapprove of occasional marijuana use. These findings highlight the importance of helping kids find friends who do not approve of marijuana use. Otherwise, it is likely that your teachings will be subject to undermining.
