In 2008, one of the world’s best athletes was enjoying tremendous fame and fortune after having won more olympic gold medals than any other swimmer in the history of man. Michael Phelps was being hailed as national hero and international superstar. Astronomical amounts of money were being thrown his way in the form of endorsements and commercial add campaigns. Surely, his life’s work was paying off with tremendous success. Then a picture surfaced in which Phelps was shown smoking marijuana at a party. His fall from grace was sudden and sharp. Cable news headlines flashed his picture with the word “moron” underneath. Several of his lucrative endorsements pulled the plug, and young swimmers across the nation struggled to make sense of the superstar’s colossal blunder. Even today, no bio of Michael Phelps is complete without a reference to his post olympic drug use.
