Preventing Substance Abuse

After the first year of life, our kid’s chances of dying begin to go down. Their bodies get stronger. Their immune system becomes fortified and their brains develop important life-preserving instincts. If left to nature, the threats that face our children would continue to decline until long after their fortieth birthday. But unfortunately, this is not the case. Shortly after crossing into their 14th year of life, our children’s mortality rate skyrockets by some 200%.(1) Every year, thousands of these young family members are taken from us without warning. Their bright young lives are cut short, but not by disease or skate boarding accidents; they are taken by substance abuse. So profound is the impact of substance abuse upon America’s youth, that it was the subject of an urgent 2007 report by the United States Surgeon General titled “A Call To Action”.
One of the best ways for you to prevent substance abuse by your own children, is to partner with a local anti-substance abuse organization. Please visit the MpoweredParent Hometown Connection Page, where you can network with the organizations that serve your community. If you don’t see your town listed, just tell us, and we’ll change that.
This website will keep you posted on emerging drug trends. It offers you volumes of credible research across many different topics. You’ll find invaluable insight here; techniques and strategies that will empower you as a parent. You may even find a bit of inspiration on these pages. But you won’t find the most critical ingredient needed in order to protect your family and insure your child’s future against the horrors of addiction. That ingredient is commitment. You’ll need to believe in the importance of your efforts. You’ll have to embrace the fact that you will be the deciding factor in your child’s future. You’ll need to understand that not everyone wants to become part of your solution. And you’ll need to be prepared for the ignorance of a few good friends. If you can bring that type of commitment to the table, then there is no doubt. You will protect your child from the allures of substance abuse. You may just protect a few others as well. Welcome to the MpoweredParent Network. We’ll do it together.
