Marijuana is famous for its effect on the human pupil. Shortly after ingesting the drug, some people’s pupils can dilate by 3 mm or more. For some parents, though, there is a big difference between “Hey, Johnny’s pupils sure do look big don’t they,” and “Hold on a second. Johnny’s pupils are 3 mm’s larger than a normal pupil should be.” This subtle distinction may mean the difference between a concerned parent just shrugging their shoulders at an odd symptom, or that same parent seizing a valuable opportunity to intervene in a pattern of drug use. “Knowing”, could save your child’s life.
Drug recognition experts most often rely upon a hand held pupilometer to measure the size of their subject’s pupil. It couldn’t be any easier, and its an effective way of determining when a subject is actively under the influence of Marijuana, Hallucinogens (L.S.D., Ketamine or ecstasy), C.N.S. Stimulants (like cocaine, adderall, ritalin or methamphetamine), and some antidepressants. Download our Free Drug ID Symptom Chart to find out how a specific drug will effect the subjects pupil. Please note that not all drugs effect the pupil, and even those that do, will only cause a chage while the person is under the influence. You should also know that a large number of today’s drug users are under the influence of multiple drugs at the same time. This could produce normal pupil results. Nonetheless, if your 14 year old was just smoking marijuana in backyard shed, you should find a conspicuously enlarged pupil.
